It's because it perfectly captures what people were originally expecting from the movie to begin with.
A design reminiscent of the original look. Instead of having stone clubs for hands, they just gave it gorilla arms, a fair revamp. A clear face, rather than some melting cheese. The face was made to look more like it was sculpted out of clay, rather than the wrinkly masks they originally used.
It took the idea of clay golems and updated it, rather than having some hollywood exec give his take on what he thinks a creature called a putty should be (And ending up just aping the Chitauri or something)
