The fact that Inoue wrote (practically) all of Kiva is one of the most surprising things I've learned about it. Like, I'm pretty sure I heard that before at some point, but seriously...the best way I can describe what Kiva feels like to me is that it's like if every story was written by a different person, one who never even saw the scripts for the episodes preceding or following theirs. And that they only have some vague knowledge of where each character and the overall plot is at any given point, and then just sort of writes things they feel the characters would do, without paying any attention to what they actually have done or will do later.
Basically, a really crappy round robin writing exercise. Except it really was just one guy? Ouch. Wow. Jeez.
I'd contest the claim that there's no good ideas to be found in Inoue's writing, though. I think Kiva is full of interesting things, it's just the show manages to be bad in spite of that and just...doesn't use or execute them very well.
Still, I'm just...very surprised/disappointed by Kiva. I'd heard of how it was kinda crappy, and I was hoping it'd be overblown, but it really is pretty crappy. And I'd heard that Inoue was a now sort of infamous writer, but I'd seen relatively little of his work...I know he wrote a bunch of episodes of Ryuki, and of course Agito. Both fine shows. Of course, he also wrote most of the early movies, which were hit and miss. Kiva is just on a whole 'nother level though. How he managed to go from heading Agito to Kiva is...baffling.
...Then again, I'm running my mouth off about this, but this is just my opinion based on half the show. On the flipside, it's
just
half the show and already it's got me this disappointed, I'm not too optimistic about the rest.
