I'd say it's a little of both. Blade definitely hits its stride around the halfway point (and stays there), but the early episodes are good in their own right, despite the breakneck pace.

I'm actually kind of surprised you picked up that Kenzaki has stuff going on already. I remember not really appreciating how much solid character building happens with him in those early episodes until looking back on them in retrospect. You really are in for a heck of a ride if you're already enjoying it now.
