Oh man this was so good. Kyuranger is solid in general, despite some rough bits early on, but when it hits a home run like this, it's
excellent
. So much to say:
- Lucky was in top form this episode. Not only does he do that thing I've been saying he's best at since episode 2 where his role in the episode is to let other characters have the spotlight, what with holding Scorpio back so Kotarou and Stinger can have their moment, that whole scene with the crowd was amazing. Episode 1 Lucky probably would've called them all wimps or something for being so willing to bow to Jark Matter, but here he takes it in stride, clearly understanding why they'd be so scared, and that his actions (i.e. actually saving them) will speak a lot louder than his words could. Considering how loud his words are, that's really impressive.
- Even when he does pipe up it's mostly just to tell everyone to get somewhere safe, and on top of all that, he also finds the time to cheer up Kotarou. I have no idea when Lucky became genuinely cool, but it feels nice having my initial optimism pay off so much. I mean, the よっしゃラッキー! count this episode was
zero
.
- Speaking of that crowd, this show has done a fantastic job at making its universe honestly feel oppressed. Basically nobody is ever just happy to see the Kyurangers when they show up and you really get a sense of just how much they're the underdogs in this scenario. It's a very different flavor from pretty much every other Sentai out there.
- Kotarou was also great here too. In just a couple appearances he's had a nice arc and it was awesome seeing the relationship building they did with him and Stinger pay off.
- Ryu Tei-Oh tripping that guy was a rare example of it actually mattering what Voyagers the robots are using, which was cool.
- I'm definitely hyped for next week but what's crazy is that instead of just feeling like setup the way the last couple times they've done two-parters felt, this episode really did stand on its own.
