Yep, you are dead right. It was the decade where Toei tried to experiment with Super Sentai, which is probably why I too find it to be the best era. The 80s was the era when they perfected the formula, the 90s was the era of experimentation, 2000s the era of add on mecha, 2010s right now seems to be the era of comfortability, toy sales, and safe zones.
