This is a hard one to judge. On the one hand, there were a lot of moments that made me smile. Rusty coming back was an amazingly unexpected surprise, but works pretty well as a bookend, even if his only purpose is a glorified wikipedia. The armistice scene, the regeneration, and his talk with his companions are perfection. Bill coming back, while fake, is welcome, as is the Nardole (and even Clara!) appearance. And that cliffhanger has me so much more hyped for Doctor Who than I have been for most other series.

On the other hand, the plot is threadbare. The villain is brushed under the carpet, despite being telegraphed as obviously evil. The Captain has no reason to be there other than needing to go back (although I don't really mind him being a Lethbridge Stewart), there's so little to link this to Tenth Planet, and the First Doctor... no. His character is assassinated to make sexist jokes that aren't funny on any level, and make Moffat look clever to say "How great am I! I don't insult women and make lesbian jokes!" Hartnell could be patronising at times, and a little off in his own beliefs, but the First Doctor was not like this. And it hurts me that this is how a generation will know his character. Plus, he has no reason to be there. He doesn't further the plot, or provide anything new. Him and 12 talk a little about being scared of regeneration, and that's it. That scene is great, but it's so little. It's like Moffat wanted the surprise twist of "Look, the 1st Doctor", and then realised he had no idea what he wanted to do with him.

So yeah, this special... the bits I like, I really like. The montage at the beginning, showing where the Doctor has been/is going. The fade in from Tenth Planet. The ending, with Twelve's speech... even if his part about "The children can hear it" is way too ToQGer for me to take seriously on any level. Whittaker's first shots, her first line. But the bits I don't like cut deep, and make it hard to enjoy. The constant sexism, even if it is called out, the fake Bill and the big deal they make out of it, the amazing lack of plot... Honestly, I don't love this special. I don't hate it either, but it's not my favourite regeneration episode, by any means. I can't give it a number, because my thoughts are so mixed. I wanted to love this, and I'm sad I don't. But so is life.
