Impure form of the gas. The purified form is more powerful.

The bottles used are the purified form. That's why they can't bottle their own and use it to open the box. It has to be in pairs of best matches, which can only be done from the purified version.

Essentially the leaked out gas needs to be filtered to be put back in to get Pandora's box to recognize it correctly. Like a shipping/storage box that had its contents smashed inside and mixed up.
