The writers knew exactly what they were doing with him. He was socially awkward with an inferiority complex along with a massive guilt issue over the fact that 3 Zyumens were killed to create his powers. He was lonely, awkward, and just wanted to do what he could for his friends. He suffered a mild form of PTSD, and it showed from his occasional breakdowns.

Misao was literally the 2nd most defined character in Zyuohger behind Yamato...
