What surprises me a bit is that most of the complaints people are having aren't anything new. Presumably the hope was that they would've ironed out those issues by now, but the pacing of the story seems to be the head writer's style (on top of Zyuohger, Junko Komura was also one of the writers on Kamen Rider Wizard, a show that constantly gets flack because of how little happens), and frankly I think LuPat has done a
significantly
better job keeping things moving that Zyuohger. Despite the stable status quo, nearly every episode has fleshed out the characters or the world in ways that instantly disqualify them from being filler.
The question of how little focus the Patrangers get has also been hounding the show for a while, and, waste of the premise or not, it always seemed evident from the start that the Lupinrangers were meant to be the "real" protagonists. The plot revolves around a Collection of objects only they and the Ganglers actually care about, the first episode was almost entirely about them, and they even get top billing in the name of the series. I've been meaning to find an excuse to mention this all year, but my personal theory is that Toei started with the fresh new motif of phantom thieves, and only decided to insert more cop Rangers when they realized a huge part of the appeal of stories about good guy thieves is them fighting cops who are usually also good guys.
At any rate, despite the very, very unfortunate results of the lopsided focus (when was the last time we saw PatKaiser?), I think the show's portrayal of the Patrangers
has
actually gotten better over time. Their characters have gotten a lot more refined and the show became far less likely to do entire episodes that only serve to make the team look like clowns after the first few times.
I don't know, it's just... obviously it's not a perfect show, but you could say that about pretty much any Sentai. I respect the opinion of anyone who's not enjoying it, but, personally, I still stand by my early verdict that Lupinranger VS Patranger is the most exciting Sentai we've had in years.
To each there own, but I knew when I saw who the head writer was, It was going to be 80% filler, 20% plot, and I wasn't that far off. Some people like mostly slice of life eps, while some like a more plot focused series. I'm more for both, where you need the slower episodes to flesh out the characters while you need the overall narrative to keep things going while they have the occasional character arc, like say ToQger and Kyuranger. LuPat to me just fells like a person learning how to drive for the first time, goes a bit, then stalls, goes a little bit, then stalls...etc.
