I think the Riders in this special are actually intended to be from previous timelines of Ryuki, which is why they're "warriors of old" and Ren doesn't know what happened to Eri even when he remembers his memories and why they needed "life" to go into the real world. Still very messy overall though, specially since the whole Odin plot basically receives no explanation. Did het get a Watch from the Time Jackers or something?

Still, it's better this time Inoue was messing up a mini-series than the main sow itself like what happened with Decade, where four episodes which should have been critical to the show ended up pointless since Inoue was basically just writing his own standalone stories and didn't care about the series in general.
