The Digimon Movie got made because the Pokemon movie was a huge hit and Digimon was popular when it was airing on TV. Saban was like "If Pokemon can do well in theaters, so can Digimon!". It's like how the Doug movie was released in theaters because the Rugrats movie did so well.

I knew about the Digimon Movie coming out as a kid because one anime magazine was promoting it. I knew about the other two movies from Japan because I would go to collector shops as a kid and one Japanese collector shop that I would always vist had new Digimon stuff being imported before the US got it. (I also used the Internet at home to find this stuff as well). I was lucky enough to own some Japanese Digimon toys and cards that would be imported.
