Anyway, I'll agree that Jan is kind of annoying, but I adore Retsu and Ran. Gou is a great character, and Ken is...Alright. He always seemed tacked on, imo.
As for Rio and Mele, I enjoyed them so much because, based on my experience with Sentai, KR, and PR, I'm really rather used to having a one note antagonist who just sits around throwing monsters and getting angry when they die. No character growth. No character depth. Just "He's evil because don't question it. He's the bad guy." So seeing Rio and Mele, the (First) antagonists of the series go through their own character arcs, growing and evolving, having a shifting motivation was a thing of beauty to me.
Basically, Rio and Mele didn't feel like villains who appeared at the beginning and end of an episode in their death fortress talking about evil schemes. They felt like actual characters.
