It was self-defense. According to Medina and his girlfriend at the time, his roommate (who was supposedly Medina's girlfriend's ex. Supposedly) busted into Medina's room all super angry after an argument they had, so he grabbed one of his swords and was all "don't come near me!" and the dude came near him, and well he was holding a sword and you get the rest.

It was a tragic turn of events, but it's not like he straight up murdered the guy in cold blood. Most people take "I'm arming myself with a fucking Conan sword" as a clear indication of "please stay away good sir I feel threatened." His roommate was evidently not one of those people.

Currently he's serving six years after pleading guilty to voluntary manslaughter, which I think is fair since he did willingly arm himself with a deadly weapon even if the intent was not to kill. According to Wikipedia he was sentenced in 2017, so he should be out in 2023. Does he deserve punishment for killing someone? Of course, and he's receiving it. Does he deserve the benefit of context? I think so. He wasn't high, or had a history of (real life) violence or anything. Just a bad altercation ending in a bad way.
