I just, I'm not seeing how Shinji's supposed to seem protective here. He doesn't know these people at all. For him to show up and say that Yui's not safe with Ren around, it strikes me as a massive overstep. It's in character, it's the same thing he did in the premiere with the truck driver, but it's zero percent charming or heroic here. It's... I feel like they're going for a thing where he lets his confidence get the best of him, but it feels so much grosser when he's doing it to a pair of friends (or more?) rather than a monster or another Rider. It's too much.

I mean, kind-of? I think the show is making some interesting moves of not totally nailing down who Shinji is as a Rider. I like him figuring it out in real-time. If he's still clinging to a vague I Want To Protect People motto in episode 40, we've got a problem. For now, I think it's an okay choice for the show to make.
