What made him work so well was just how petty he was over the whole thing, too. Why did he do what he did 12 years ago? Because someone else was better than him, and had the audacity to be a nice guy. Why did he try to kill the girl? To make Shinnosuke's father's sacrifice pointless. And why does he torment Shinnosuke? Just because he can.

Yeah. And the show even pulled a "he fucked up but he's sorry and he's totally on Shinnosuke's side now" misdirect before things got really dark. Damn it, I loved Nira. This whole era is really whenI felt Drive went from being a huge disappointment to really good.
