Well, to be fair, at the start of the episode, Ren opening his eyes and pounding impotently on the ground happens exactly after Shinji says he was wrong about him. The way the scene is edited together, with the timing of the music and everything, points to Shinji's approval being the thing that pushes Ren that extra bit over the edge, while the way it's acted, with Ren not actually looking at Shinji or anything, points to him not even listening at all, and it just being dramatically convenient timing.

There's definitely room to interpret it either way.
