I think the issue with Power Rangers stems from lack of ambition and creativity. Saban had initial success because it was literally lightning in a bottle. The stars aligned all at the right moment and the show became an unpredictable success for what it was. Every new incarnation of Power Rangers is Saban or someone else attempting to replicate that flash in the pan. Which just is not happening. The only way to move the franchise forward is to balance nostalgia with something new and not rely too heavily on trends.
The 2017 film failed because not only was it too far removed from the original while still maintaining its basic concept, but it also tried to hard to be another Transformers or Iron Man. Studios fear the helmet and spandex for some reason. If the franchise wants to have widespread success it cannot rely on what's trendy, but instead embrace what makes it unique, embrace the cheese, while building on top of it. World build. Establish a proper lore. Bring back familiar faces besides a cameo. Take familiar designs and build off of them.
There's this new concept for a film by Hasbro making the rounds of a rebooted MMPR team that time travels, and has a female red ranger. Why? Bring back Time Force if you're going the time travel route. Why break what's already established? In my opinion, they need to bring back the original MMPR actors on an epic quest where they interact with some other previous rangers, and lead into the Shattered Grid story line.
