I really recommend using Gundam Markers when you're starting out. They are designed to stick to plastic without primer are great for detailing. And because they are from Bandai, the colors match very well. Sadly, they don't make a Zero One yellow yet. If you only want to detail, grab some Gundam markers and some fine paint brushes. Metallic gold and silver are some of the ones I use the most.
You can pump a small amount of the marker paint onto a small metal tray (or aluminum foil) and then dip the brush in the paint and go at it.
The paint is pretty durable, but if you mess up, you can scratch it off with a sharp blade or wipe it off with alcohol. Don't worry about staying in lines, you can scratch off any paint that goes where it wasn't supposed to. < This is actually the big trick of good painting. Don't try too hard to be accurate. Paint around the area, then remove the excess.
The viscosity is very good, not too runny and not too thick to leave unsightly brush strokes.
I'll try to make a picture guide soon. It's something I've been meaning to do for a while. I have the Astro Megazord Mini-pla kit on order so I might use that as the basis for a guide depending on how much paint it needs.
