As much as we don't like to admit it, sadism is one of the most effective sources of entertainment. Fiction is driven by conflict after all. We want our favorite characters to be happy and get along, but that would be boring. We want to see them earn their happiness. And Kusaka is a major source of conflict. I usually cheer on the killer when there's an unlikable victim.
