But here, it seemed like it was directly connected to previous stuff, with all the glimpses it had of what I'm assuming were previous Ultraman characters. I didn't feel like that had any impact at all on my understanding of the story, and it definitely felt like this still stands as its own thing, but I'm curious if Ultraman is different from Kamen Rider in that respect because I genuinely don't know.
Ultraman makes it a point that everything exists in one big universe... that's actually a multiverse, but it's really best not to worry about it right away. Continuity tends to be handled in a very digestible way, where all you need to know about is what you're told. Ultraman Zero, for example. Guy's got a whole decade of adventures that actually happened, and you could go watch them, but all that's relevant to Z at the moment is that he's a cool hero with a lot of experience, and that's why Z looks up to him. Anything more complicated than that will likely be given clear exposition thanks to Haruki being as fresh to Ultraman as any new viewer is, which is the case for the protagonists of most other shows as well, even one like Geed that leaned particularly heavily on existing continuity.
Essentially, while there is a lot of connection between shows, it tends to be pretty strictly focused simply on allowing for returning
characters
, with elaborate world-building and overarching plots you need to be caught up on being close to non-existent, which is why I'm happy to see people jumping into Z and liking it!
