I think there's also something to be said for the show having both Chalice
and
Hajime get rejected by people. It makes it bigger than just A Scary Masked Rider Is Scary, it makes it a deeper schism. There's a level of rejection here, where there's something innately wrong with Hajime (or humanity!) that can't be obscured by a different face.
