No, they didn’t choose to explain it. Personally, I want to imagine it's something dark they didn’t want to show, like she remembers a dead friend who used to love marshmallows or that she desired to eat them as a child but her abusive parents didn’t let her or something.

I was waiting for the reference to happen sometime during the season haha.
