Considering the context of the episode, I think that was intentional; Part of the joke that they were going for. Remember, his power is actually what gets them discovered in the first place, and considering his power is farting out literal smoke clouds, I'd say yeah, it's more just an intentional bit of ironic humor and hammering in how incompetent Sledge is.
