I genuinely love your take on this. I don't really feel that connexion with Shinji as a character, but I absolutely can appreciate how, after all he goes through in the show, where like every other character is basically gaslighting him for not accepting the premise of the Rider War on the word of Kanzaki alone, it must be nice to finally see him makes the bonds that he obviously so desired from his peers—again, as evidenced in Ryuki vs. Agito, I guess, as well as his constant yearning to think the best of others.

I was surprised by what elements are the ones that the franchise returns to, and I was surprised by how many of those elements come from Episode: Final, but you're right, I guess this is an example of the oversimplification present in looking back.
