I'm not sure I follow your reading of Shinji being responsible for the woes of his world, I think the world in which Ryuki takes place is fundamentally broken, and he can't truly be held responsible for the fact that the toast always falls butter side down. I would agree that perhaps he lacks the capacity to adapt his views to a changing world, but that could be said of all the characters of the show.

Absolutely agree here! I feel eternally grateful to kurona for detailing some of the context of the show, and I'm stuck now of being in this place of being annoyed with it and now disappointed in it; this information is almost like a curse because now I have to think about that context, and not just be frustrated with Kobayashi.
