The fact that this is happening in the final ten episodes is what makes it so bizarre to me. They've got such a solid opening song, the show itself is a hit... why mess with success? And why do it when nothing else really changes? So weird. Would love to better understand that decision making.

See, back in 2007 the imagins were popular especially since the voice talents behind them were also big deals. And voice talents in Japan have somewhat of a pop idol-like status within the fandoms(emphasis on fandom since even mainstream Japan only knows a handful of voice actors such as Koichi Yamadera, Nana Mizuki, and Mamoru Miyano who have made efforts to appeal to the masses who could care less about nerd/geek stuff within Japan be it recording artists or as regulars in variety shows). Personal observation, a small chunk of Den-O's popularity relied upon that fandom and was a nice entry point for people who might like anime and games but did not know much about toku to give it a chance. Of course, the original mix is still great but the choice makes sense when considering all this.
