The translation looks like this:
"How far... is the train station?"
"It's right where I'm standing."
"Is it okay... if we're together?"
"Yes."

But, assuming I'm not messing this up too, it should be more like:
"Do you know... how to get to the train station?"
"I was just heading there myself."
"Would it be okay... if we went there together?"
"Of course."

I think this makes everything you were praising about the scene even more true than it was? Like you say, so much of it is the staging and performances, and they utterly nailed all that.

Aw, I really like that phrasing. Thanks! It was sort of clear that they were talking around their feelings (Ryoko's comment about them "being together" feels more like "in the company of one another right this second" than some huge declaration of eternal love, and Shinji's comment about the train station lines up with them being in the mountains in the next scene) but this really gives it a deeper resonance. It's Ryoko saying that she wants to run away, and Shinji saying that he'll always run away with her. It's the lived-in nature of their relationship, when just having this other person around is the most important thing in the world.

Such a good episode! Perfect time to watch another one!
