When people try to cancel someone, they will ensure as many higher-up eyes get on it as possible so the person loses out on future employment, current employment, etc. You're literally "cancelling" their career.
I'd also say that "cancelling" an actor/director/writer/author relates to the idea of money. If someone does something utterly egregious, you don't want your money to support them and give them even the slightest opportunity to literally continue on your dime cause it can make you look complicit or at least willing to look the other way. Some can make sincere apologies, but that takes time and is not a guarantee that their career can be revived. Granted, our money won't really reach its way to the Vice VA, but knowing that we (may or may not) enjoy something he's a part of can leave a bad taste in some of our mouths and make us think that we should only love it up to a certain point. There is a part of me that wonders if digging into someone's past to find something stupid they did as a stupid teenager is really the best thing for anyone cause it's not all that surprising that someone did something they regret as a teenager. Don't misinterpret though, as saying something stupid when young is much easier to forgive than a literal act of violence or harassment which was long buried.
If the Vice VA issued a formal apology at least, then it would make things a little easier, but only by so much.
