To those who aren't used to their actions having consequences, being held accountable feels like being persecuted.

This article talks about things in more absolute terms than I agree with, but it does make an important point that many people who "get cancelled" don't actually suffer any lasting damage to their careers, even if they make no attempt to fix their awful behavior:

No, Cancel Culture is where the Twitter mob go after someone successful they don't like, usually due to their political beliefs or something they deem "problematic". Where they make false accusations, usually something taken out of context or straight up lies. Said company here's about it, thinking it's a huge thing, when it's really a minority of people that just have a loud voice and then they lose their job or work before the person being accused has a chance to explain themselves. It all started with Weinstein and the whole #MeToo thing. Now Weinstein was a POS and a scumbag, so no issue there. But after that, they get like a dopamine hit from that and then they got addicted to it. So they go after anyone they could that has like the slightest black stain in their history, even something that's not really a big deal, like Hank Azaria voicing Apu, when nobody cared the entire time Simpsons was on. It's mostly done by miserable, unhappy and genuinely shitty people that like having power and control over someone, just so they can have that dopamine hit, when it's pretty scummy and sad at the same time, just wanting to ruin someone's life just so they can feel happy for 10 minutes and move on to someone else.
