Sure, you could reimagine it as a dark edgy world where people get possessed by malevolent time travelling demons, but it's Den-O! Momotaros is here to be funny! And amnesiac, for some reason. (This is where Den-O Imagin rules start to get messy, don't worry about it too hard.)
Much like all-time classic villain Kai, it is very difficult for me to give a shit about the Rules of Den-O. The explanation here - time distortions sort of broke Momo - is, honestly, more than sufficient for a story about Momo needing to start living for himself rather than tying himself to someone else for validation.
As for these episodes not doing anything new with the Den-O formula for a new setting... I mean, I definitely wouldn't want a grim-and-gritty Amazons-esque version of Den-O!
Ever!
(Well, maybe for an hour, as a laugh.) But I wonder what this series might've done with the raw materials of Den-O: memories and contracts and imagination monsters from the end of time and trains and passes and astronomy and coffee shop creeps. The Agito episodes really impressed me with how and what got remixed, and it's a little disappointing we didn't get a chance to see that for Den-O.

in this story, that's why! He's just shouting BE A TRAIN FOR ME ALREADY in Momo's general vicinity, and acting perturbed that that pitch isn't exactly what an enraged imagination monster who misses his friends wants to hear. It's a plan with about no logical steps to it, and I already regret thinking about it.
