Personally I just assumed the barrier was to prevent Horrors from escaping.

I feel as though it takes away from the stakes tbh, there are some series that mostly ignore the timer and while they are alright, some of the best plots in the series actually make creative use of the timer limitation in fun ways that let you be on the edge of your seat as a result.

And also to like... you know, showcase that the armor isn't the main part of the Knight themselves, it's them and their training while the armor enhances that. Plus you know, budget.
