I also wanna say while the MCU did suddenly popularize the the shared universe concept again when it started (Like others have said including myself, the idea isn't new. Universal monsters, Godzilla, Showa toku, Doctor Who, etc have done it as well.), I don't think it's right to put all the blame on that alone.

Marvel tried it and it worked out perfectly for them.

The problem is how every attempt since by competing companies constantly miss the point of WHY it works when it does. You gotta build a world before you start crossing aspects of it over. Avengers didn't happen until 5 years or so after Iron Man started things. But a lot of studios and big wigs only see the money it generates.

The problem isn't the MCU, imo. The problem is that the MCU worked out so well that Hollywood over-saturated the concept once they dollar bills began to appear en masse.
