The belts are based on martial artists' belts, mostly the karate gis.

The story? That's what I'm trying to figure out.

Arc 1 - Finding strong fighters to compete in the tournament like preliminaries.

Arc 2 - When the riders form a team of their own to compete in the tournament as it begins.

Arc 3 - The true purpose of the tournament is revealed. The final boss would be defeated, but the main rider & dark rider have to finish their fight until one of them remains standing.

You know the story that was non-canon on Street Fighter Alpha: Generations? The protagonist would be the son of the dark rider unknowingly until later. The mother was pregnant by the dark rider when they were young. She left him at an orphanage until the time came for him to learn about his heritage.
