Something I've been hearing consistently about XII from my research is that the fans are divided on who's the real protagonist and that the characters are kind of a mixed bag. It has me curious at least.

XIII-2 is actually my favorite FF! It gives a big improvement for the Crystarium by allowing you to have more freedom over how your characters level up. I really enjoyed playing with different Monsters in my party and how the time travel was integrated with the gameplay in various ways.

XIII LR is one you might need a guide for, since you're going to be watching the clock a lot. There are a few limited time quests that are easy to miss. But otherwise, the time limit is generous enough, especially if you spam chronostasis. There's a lot of customization options for the Schema system as well.
