I think what made Kaito work for me here was a mix of regret and frustration. He took Modern-Day Warlord as far as he could, and it just ended up getting him killed. In this story, he's got to reinvent himself, or at least figure out how to find fulfillment in a world where he can't win. He first has to acknowledge that, while his motivations might've been good, his decision-making was literally apocalyptic.

Giving Kaito a little room to come to grips with his failure, and then try and find a better path... how can you dislike that, even if you dislike Kaito? It's a smart choice for that character's resurrection.
