I think it works because that realization is happening during an intensely emotional fight. He's been beaten in the last house contest, he's been beaten by Zero-One, he's been exposed as a cheater... like, he's going through a lot at that point in the story. And the thing that's been eating at him, and the reason why he's been so cruel to Smile, is that he knows she has a point and he can't admit it to himself. He's spent years recasting his memories as a thing to overcome or escape, to create this high-rolling version of himself, but know he's like Shit I Was Maybe Happier Back Then. The whole story's about recognizing where your happiness comes from, and how a home is a big part of that, so I think in that final moment Arayashiki realizes that his childhood was pretty happy.
