So this has actually turned into an interesting discussion - should PR adaptations be 1:1 or should they take liberties? That question can apply to other things as well, like film adaptations of comics, books, manga, etc.

I don't think the "if you want it to be a 1:1 adaptation, then just watch Sentai" argument is perfect, because people may just want the story presented in their native language - this is why dubbed anime exists. So a Power Rangers adaptation that follows the original Sentai story has a similar appeal as a dubbed anime. But as others have mentioned, it doesn't always translate perfectly, and sometimes we get something really unique and interesting as an end result, like RPM.

Personally, I find it interesting when shows are re-adapted - it gives me a new way to watch something I enjoy, even if it's not as good. Macross and Robotech have different appeals, just like Power Rangers and Sentai. Plus, I like there to be a separation between the two. So that's my take.
