Tbh, it's expected on the first place because Akari is a scientist. Fictional intellectuals are on par with superpowers in general, if someone's not physically fit and able, the other main way to shine is being a scientist, they're as valuable as fighters in toku as they can create anything, they're typically the one with greatest contributions in any character role, like protagonists such as Sento, antagonists such as Ryoma, or heroines like Akari you said here. I think to talk about being useful, it's kinda unfair to criticize people who aren't scientists to be not as useful as scientists. I knew from the beginning even when I was annoyed by Akari forcing her scientist beliefs to anyone.

I thought the change by getting rid of the gas only means turning themselves good/better person. Being goofy, ridiculous, and embarassing aren't inherent part of being good though. IIRC it's done due to real life reasons of Gentoku actor's relatives watching the show.
