It's not something the show says outright, but I think we can assume that the lawyer wasn't good at his job, and used the excuse of The Deck Is Stacked Against Me to justify witness tampering and mild rampaging. It's a thing the show has circled a lot, the concept of meeting resistance with shortcuts rather than finding the resolve within yourself -- maybe even by letting out a part of yourself that you think people wouldn't like! Feels like a theme!
