We never met the commander minus one or two lines, but this is treated with such significance and importance it just falls flat.

We never even got a hint about Hiromi's and the commander's relationship, and we kinda needed to for this to have any narrative weight since Hiromi really hasn't made himself particularly interesting or relatable, and even if we can only assume what the relationship was, so, yeah... This needed a better setup.

I think it worked okay for me? Fenix is such a dull concept to begin with that I am in favor of ANYTHING that makes it weirder and more personal for our heroes. Commander Chameleon is a terrifying foe that attacks Hiromi's dedication, which is incredibly fun to think about. Even if what came before is only glimpsed in sepia-toned flashbacks, I think their interplay over the last dozen episodes created enough of a launching pad to propel both characters to more idiosyncratic storylines in the future.

(Also, I can't currently think of anything more boring than having to spend time with Fenix before everything blows up and everyone gets weird. The producers were maybe doing us a favor by keeping the Fenix backstory implied!)
