I often feel the same way. I'd prefer fun, but unnecessary, side-stories as opposed to "you better watch this if you want to know what the plot is". When you watch a show live you can follow it decently by watching everything as they get released. but if you are watching after the show has aired the continuity becomes a nightmare to try and figure out without reading spoilers. On the other hand if you watch a show after it comes out you can actually watch the movies, which are also often plot relevant! Damned if you do and damned if you don't situation.
