I agree, but this is what Kenzaki himself wanted. He never forgave himself for the death of his family (in which, of course, he was not guilty, but he felt guilty) and subconsciously wanted to punish himself, while saving someone. Preferably someone close. Actually, therefore, for all the fanfiction of the decision from Zi-O, I like it, because it means that Kenzaki has healed from his injury and is ready for a full life.
But in general, I like the ending of OOO (the show, not the anniversary movie) much better, because there, Agee's kindness elicited a response from Ankh. While the relationship between Kenzaki and Hajime remains one-sided, except that there are fewer fights.
