Episode 39: Over the Times...
This is the sort of ending where I really implore you not read my post on it.
Seriously, if you've been at all interested in
Changerion
up to now, but have been reading my posts instead of watching, don't do that here.
Even then though, I'm gonna do my best to be as vague as possible here, because I frankly don't want the ending to this show, which has shown to go in wildly different directions, to be spoiled. I found it that special.
With that out of the way, I really have to wonder if this was the planned ending for the show all along. The way it comes about very much signals that it was due to the show getting cut short from its planned 52 episodes, and yet, I still think that it overall works in the grand context of the show?
It's similar to the (in)famous ending of
Roseanne
(my favorite sitcom of all time, by the way!), wherein it casts a whole new light on everything that came before, and gives the viewer the window to read into past scenes in an entirely new light. And for those who end up being fans of
Changerion
, I could easily see this ending being just as contentious as
Roseanne
's'.
It's incredibly daring for a show aimed at children to have an ending like this too. A show wherein it's actually debatable on if the ending is definitive or not, and whether or not the heroes have truly won is not one you often come across in children's' media, and one that we wouldn't see the likes of again until
Kamen Rider Faiz
, another Inoue work(which makes me all the more curious about that upcoming 20th anniversary movie).
In the end, there's alot of different ways of processing this sort of ending, and it's one that, had
Changerion
actually had a fanbase, I imagine would still get loads of discussion even up to this day.
Final thoughts on the show as a whole coming later. Not today though. I think I need to lie down.
