The result would be to defeat the villain and save humanity, (unlike Daiji's), but Houtarou admits that he's selfish and refuses to give up on his friends, which I think is admirable and courageous, a hero who strives for the best case scenario while his rival is resigned to a terrible compromise of despair and loss. Houtarou's idealism reminds Spanner of his past self, so it's like Spanner is fighting against his "former weakness", which actually turns out to be stronger than him. Houtarou's here to prove that he's not someone who only preaches about his Gotcha, but is determined to protect it with his fists as well, which even gets a small acknowledgement from Spanner.
Other than talking about "the villain" for "save humanity" part, reminder that killing off all Chemies are also the part of "saving humanity" here, saving humanity
from
Chemies. It's true that Daiji's plan will just leave humanity stagnant to think that Giff won't attack them if not "provoked", but in general yes, well-intentioned extremist's plans all have "the result would be to defeat the villain (or improve things) and save humanity" in general. I know you support selfish notions but, guess, just comparison (not putting down either), an other series have this dilemma as well and, the main Rider aren't said as selfish, like Ryuki with Shinji opposing Kagawa's plan to save the world by sacrificing Yui (same one for refusing to give up his friends).

Shows that a life is invaluable, worth more than an inordinate amount of gold.
But turning the world into gold doesn't compromise with Atropos at least, everything can perish as gold while Atropos remains. Atropos doesn't stand in Geryon's way on turning whole world into gold. For Orteca part, would you think that Asakura's wanting to 'reunite' with his little brother, Kitazaki bullying Takuma, or Banno begging Gou to spare him due to his intellect as something sentimental too?
