The name means "Firebird Team Phoenix-ger." The story begins when the Toshian (from 凍死 tōshi "freeze to death"), aliens from a world of cold and darkness, try to invade Earth to drain the "warmth" of joy, love and passion from humans. A phoenix, who happens to be worshiped as a Shinto god in the area the Toshian first arrive, fights to stop them... and is killed.

As he dies, he passes his fire on to four humans he deems worthy, and entrusts the priestess who tended his shrine with teaching them to wield his power and leading them against the Toshian. He continues to aid the team as a spirit advisor, until he recovers enough to take physical form again (often human form, for filming convenience) as the gold ranger.
