It's the thing this show does better than any other Rider Rivalry (or whatever you want to call the standard friction between main cast members): Eiji and Ankh are constantly trying to outwit each other, and keep each other in check. They vaguely want the same thing -- defeating the other Greeed -- but they want it for such different reasons that their ostensible partner is also their most immediate obstacle.
