I finally got around to watch the Compilation Movies for
Gundam: Reconquista in G.
And while I generally agree with the notion that these films are probably the best way to watch
G-Reco
, I do think fans tend to overhype them a bit?
Movies 1 and 2 are handled very oddly overall, such as the first film having really odd pacing and Movie 2 omitting certain scenes from the TV show that I enjoyed. I wouldn't be surprised if Movie 1 alone turned any newcomers away.
Plus, I feel like the small handful of extra scenes we get across the five movies, while they are nice, aren't the sort of thing that's going to turn someone who hated the original anime into someone who now loves it. These movies are very much for people who either already liked
G-Reco
or are trying to get into it.
But wouldn't you know it, I'm included in that. I liked the original anime back when it aired and I still like it here in movie form. Movies 3 and 4 are especially nice. Both of them having an extra 15 minutes of runtime over the other three films is a major plus in helping with how the events of both movies flow. And the new Photon Torpedo scene in Movie 4 was very well done.
If you want my personal recommendation of how to go through
Reconquista in G
, I'd say to just watch the original episodes of the anime that Movies 1 and 2 cover(1-11 if I recall right), then go ahead an watch Movies 3-5. But if you'd rather not bother with that kind of effort, then yeah, just watch all five movies. Just keep in mind they get better as they go rather than being the 1000% more effective way to watch this entry in the franchise.
TL;DR: I liked these movies for what they were, and I'm glad this rather underrated entry in the
Gundam
franchise was given a second chance.
