It's maybe a little hard to explain, but what I was trying to get at is that JK's actions in the story are him trying to be the guy that he thinks he is -- cowardly, self-serving, willing to sacrifice others in service of his own needs -- while he's actually grown and changed so much since his first spotlight that he can't fully be that guy anymore, and he needs his friends to remind him of that.
