Since this show isn't connected to the rest of the Ultra lore, I watched Heisei Ultraseven 1994. First and foremost, I want to praise the fact that, despite the almost hour-long episodes, the plots don't feel drawn out or boring. It was also nice to see Dan, Furuhashi, and Anna looking older. The Ultra Garrison's technology has been very cleverly modernized. My meticulousness suggests that the uniforms should have changed over the course of 27 years, but I'm willing to overlook such a minor detail. The action and special effects are also top-notch. It's clear they tried to show progress while maintaining the vibe of the original. I also like that people's actions now directly influence Ultraseven's victory. The world of the show feels alive, even if it's a bit sparse at times. A unifying moral compass helps tie together the disparate episodes, even if it's a bit too intrusive at times. And somehow, 90s computers look more retro than 60s tech.
Speaking of flaws, the first thing I'd like to point out is the very dark visuals. At first, I thought it was due to the video quality, but the characters' flashbacks are quite vivid, so it's a conscious choice. Well, I don't approve of it. Also, the new Ultra Garrison members don't deliver very convincing acting. Nothing terrible or show-stopping, but it's noticeable in contrast to the original.
I also want to talk about the moral compass. The show has a clear ecological compass. It's typical of a time when humanity was just beginning to understand the consequences of rapid technological development. Unfortunately, thirty years later, its failure is obvious. All green energy initiatives are used solely for profit and corruption, while no one has abandoned the use or at least the reduction of non-renewable resources. But I still want to believe that people still have a chance to wake up.
P.S. And from this frame, it's immediately obvious that this is a 90s show:
