Ultraman falls into that same category of shows that Star Trek does, in my opinion. I can't quite put my finger on why, but there's just something about the way they handle their stories. But it can be VERY good.

If you want a great modern Ultraman story to check out, try and see Ultra Galaxy: Mega Monster Battle. It's available on Bluray with an english subtitled track.
Then check out the sequel, Ultraman Zero: The Revenge of Belial. You'll have to get a fansub for that one. But I just watched it last night (I'd seen Ultra Galaxy last year) and it blew me away. Without any exaggeration, I can definitely say it was one of the best Sci-Fi movies I've seen in a LONG time.
